Introduction
Qufu Normal
University was founded in 1955. It is located in Qufu, the
hometown of Confucius, the great philosopher, educator,
politician and the creator of Confucianism. It is one of the
key universities in Shandong Province. It has a new campus
in the beautiful coastal city---Rizhao. The university takes
Confucius’ words as its instructional motto: to retain
curiosity in learning, to teach and never become weary.
The instructional
standard also aims for a very healthy mood: diligence,
simplicity, unity and personal initiative. It has trained
and provided more than 140 thousand qualified graduates to
the society and it has been making a great contribution to
Shandong’s economic construction. According to the Higher
Education Institution Comprehensive Competitive Report given
by China Science Evaluation Research Center, Qufu Normal
University was ranked 24 on the comprehensive evaluation
among 487 provincial higher education institutions. The
science research ranked the university 13 and the teaching
level ranked it 34 in the evaluation.
The university has
27 schools,64 four-year specialties six of which offer
doctor degree programs and 78 offer master degree programs.
It has 28 research institutes, 14provincial key programs and
6 provincial key laboratories. Shandong Laser Polarization
Engineering and Technology Center, Shandong Confucius
Research Base and Shandong Basic Curriculum Reform Center
were also set in the university.
Qufu Normal
University invited 2 academicians from China Science Academy
and 8 professors from different universities. It has more
than 2357 faculty and staff. The faculty numbers 1269 of
whom 255 are professors and 521 are associate professors.
Two young experts were awarded respectively national and
provincial recognition for their exceptional contributions.
There are 11 faculty members who are honored as Shandong

are candidates for the academic backbone of Shandong higher
education institutions, and 25 faculty members enjoy the

postgraduates, four-year students and two-year students
reached to 27020. Continuing education students are over
15207. The number of international students is about 90. The
specialties cover 9 branches of learning including liberal
arts, science and engineering courses.
High quality
teaching provided to four-year programs students has been
the university’s priority and it is its trademark. In recent
years, according to the training model of strong basics in
teaching, diverse fields in training students, wide learning
specialties yet defined research fields, the university is
deepening the reform of the 21st century teaching contents
and the curriculum system. It is carrying on quality
education in an all-round way and the educational quality is
developing steadily. In the provincial higher education
institutions teaching evaluation held respectively in 1995
and 1997, Qufu Normal University won the first place. And in
the country math competition held in 1996 and 1997, the
university was also awarded first. In recent years, the rate
of employment for graduating seniors has maintained 90%.
Graduates of Qufu Normal University are warmly welcome in
employment and gain a very good reputation in society
because of the undistracted studies provided in the quiet
academic environment of Qufu.
The university’s
scientific and research work is also very fruitful. It opens
a mass of advanced scientific programs including the state
“863” program. In the fields of Chinese ancient literature,
applied math, Confucianism, basic math, laser polarization
technology, operational research, automation, physics and
chemistry, educational science and physical educational
science, the university has reached an excellent level.

rewarded by province or ministry).
Continuing education
programs step in the front row of the country. The
university is the second in the whole country to establish a
continuing education program for master degree. It gained
second in 2 national excellent teaching achievements. It
holds 1 national key program in educational science and
research. In the two continuing educational evaluations
given by the Educational Ministry, the university was ranked
6 in the whole country.
Qufu Normal
University established the earliest Confucius research
center in China ----Confucius Culture College. It forms a
unique characteristic in Confucius study. It carries on
quite a few state and provincial scientific programs.
Domestic and international conferences and academic
exchanges about Confucius are frequently held. Based on the
Confucius Culture College and Shandong Confucius Research
Base, in May 2000, Confucius Culture University was jointly
set up with the help of the China Confucius Foundation and
its donors who are interested in Chinese traditional
culture.
